Herschel, Sir John Frederick William
- Herschel, Sir John Frederick William
(1792-1871)
Born in Slough, Buckinghamshire, he was the son of Sir William Herschel, the celebrated astronomer who discovered the planet Uranus. John graduated from St. John's College, Cambridge, in 1813, was immediately elected to a fellowship, and gained his M.A. in 1816. The Royal Society elected him a fellow in 1813; he received the Copley Medal in 1821, became president of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1827, and was knighted in 1831. He followed his father into the study of astronomy and spent 1834-1838 at the Cape of Good Hope cataloging double stars and nebulae of the southern hemisphere and studying Halley's comet. His major works were Preliminary Discourse on the Study of Natural Philosophy (1830) and A Treatise on Astronomy (1833), later revised into one of the most celebrated scientific treatises ever published, Outlines of Astronomy (1849). He is buried in the North Aisle of the Nave of Westminster Abbey. Three of his known poems: "On Burning a Parcel of Old MSS," "The Child to his Mother, Absent," "Tick! Tick! Tick!"
